Entering combat in June 1944, the Firefly was developed in response to the British experience in the desert that saw their Shermans getting knocked out at long range, where the 75mm main gun was ineffective. The logical choice was the 17 pounder anti-tank gun. They redesigned the gun and modified the Sherman to accept this large gun. It was very successful. More than 2100 of these vehicles were converted and placed into service. The Firefly was so successful, that it was the primary target of German panzers when encountered. Only after its destruction would they concentrate on other tanks and vehicles. In response to this unpleasant situation, Firefly crews tried to camouflage the main gun with fake muzzle brakes and paint jobs. The Firefly’s APDS ammo could penetrate the Tiger from any direction at normal combat ranges. This made the Firefly a lethal tank killing machine.
