Product Description
Built as a successor to the Cavalier, the Cromwell was originally designed to use the same Liberty engine but the increased weight of the Cromwell meant the engine was inadequate for requirements ans so it was decided that the Meteor, a depowered version of the Merlin, was to be used. Difficulties in setting up the production line meant a delay of nearly a year, so initially the Cromwell went into service with the Liberty and designated as a Centaur until the the Meteor became available whereupon it was renamed the Cromwell.
Initially the MKI mounted a 6pdr Main gun, the MKIII a 75mm Howitzer and finally, the MKIV a 95mm Howitzer. By Mid-1943 enough engines were produced to enable earlier MKI versions to be converted to the MKIV with a 75mm Gun and became the most numerically important.
The Cromwell was a fast and reliable tank capable of over 65mph on a good surface and compared favourably with the Sherman and PanzerIV. The gun was had good range and was well able to penetrate the frontal armour of a Panzer IV at normal ranges but almost useless against German heavy tanks.
Both Cromwell and Centaurs first saw action during the Normandy campaign but was at a disadvantage as it could not use its superior speed, but changed when the fighting moved to open country. The Cromwell served again in Korea and was finally retired in the late 1950`s. It is interesting to note that the German`s first post war tank, the Leopard was closer to the Cromwell than the Tiger.
