Product Description

In the early 1980`s, TV studios were looking to cash in on the success of sci-fi movies such as Star Wars, Star Trek, and Battlestar Galactica. One such series was Star Quest, which featured a crew of space explorers on their quest through the stars. Unfortunately, the show aired on the VPC network, which, at the time, wasn`t available in many markets.

When it aired, Star Quest got excellent reviews and was praised by critics. Many of the stories were excellent examples of science-fiction at its best: the crew tackled contemporary political issues in the science-fiction setting. The acting was on a level with that of other, more sophisticated dramas.

At the time, magazines called it "one of the best shows on TV". However, many other magazines followed that statement with the words "... that you can`t watch." It wasn`t that people weren`t allowed to watch the show- VPC`s small market meant that very few people had the ability to watch the channel. Thinking people weren`t watching because of competing programs, the network executives started moving the show to different nights.

Within six weeks, the show had been on four different nights, in four different time slots.
The audience that watched the show soon got tired of trying to find it. (Remember, this was long before the days of TiVO and DVR`s that automatically recorded the show- people had to look in TV Guide to know when the show would be on!)

The combination of VPC`s small market and the tough competition in the various time slots meant that Star Quest was cancelled after only six weeks. A few years later, VPC reorganized... and most of the executives who had been responsible for the poor scheduling of Star Quest moved onto to jobs with other TV networks.

By 2004, "revamped" shows such as Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica were drawing the coveted 18-34 year-old demographic craved by TV studios. VPC once again looked for sci-fi shows to fill their schedule. (By this time, VPC now reached almost all of the TV viewing audience.)

The executives looked through their archives of TV series to find any show that they could "re-imagine". Negotiations with the creators of Star Quest got underway.

The original model of the NST Catalan was found in one of the warehouses and was cleaned up, but the producers felt it wasn`t detailed enough for the high-definition cameras which would be used to film the new series. As a gesture of goodwill, the executives at VPC agreed to fund an updated version of the NST Catalan. The new model was an impressive 6 feet long, included new detailing, and cost close to $15,000 to build.

In the end, however, the executives felt the show`s budget would quickly get out of hand, especially when they started to calculate the combined costs of the special effects, the sets, and the salaries of bringing back the original cast. (There was talk of hiring new actors, but the executives correctly decided that the fans would never have allowed it.)

VPC decided not to proceed with a new version of Star Quest, and instead, commissioned two less-expensive series to take its place.
As a trivia note, the two shows which took the place of Star Quest: Phase II were: "Stranded", a densely plotted dramatic series about a group of people who get stranded on an island, and Desperate Homemakers, a soap-opera/ comedy about a group of stay-at-home wives.

In 2006, both models of the NST Catalan were sold at an auction to avid collectors. Luckily, digital version were made.

This set includes the TWO digital models, representing both versions of the NST Catalan:
  • "1980`s" version, 10,882 polygons
-with a rounded nose and less texture detail (designed for film cameras used at the time)
  • "Refit" version, 13,352 polygons
-cut-off nose, more texture detail, extra "wings", upgraded "radar" receivers, and windows on the bottom of the hull

Includes obj, cr2/ rsr/ png and a full set of textures (and templates) for both models.

Note: since this is a model of a capital-type ship, there are no moving parts. The model is not scaled to the size of the Poser people (or else it would be huge).

From the upcoming graphic novel, Beyond the Farthest Star, Jill Brady imagines herself as the captain of the NST Catalan. In fact, her favorite TV series is Star Quest.
